AXS Tank Protection Ring,
“An Engineered Solution for a Vulnerable Tank Farm”
A tank fire is serious. A tank-farm fire is catastrophic.
The record of the last two decades is consistent: Buncefield in 2005, CAPECO in 2009, Jaipur in 2009. In each case one tank lost containment, fuel left the immediate tank area, and a single-tank event became a site-wide event. Once liquid is allowed to run, the tank farm is what burns.
Existing protection — overfill prevention, dikes, foam, cooling water, emergency response — is built around the tank and around the site boundary. The ground between the two is where escalation happens.
Keep the first release close to the first tank.
AXS International, Inc. is developing the AXS Tank Protection Ring as an additional retrofit protection layer installed around an existing storage tank. It is designed to keep the first release close to the first tank.
The AXS Tank Protection Ring is additive. It does not replace overfill prevention, the tank’s fixed foam system, shell cooling, secondary containment or the site fire plan. It adds a layer between the tank and the rest of the tank farm.
Existing AXS test record.
12 m tank demonstration
Approximately 40,000 L of diesel, AXS Floating Rolls on the surface: two and a half minutes of free burn, then the installed foam system — extinguished in 17 seconds, flame temperature recorded below 400 °C.
Independent vessel testing
20 L and 400 L vessel testing referenced in the AXS record at TÜV Vienna and the Industrial Technology Research Institute, Taiwan, for flame and explosion control using the AXS expanded-aluminum network.
AXS field record
Welding performed on tanks containing explosive vapour with AXS installed, without ignition.
The AXS Tank Protection Ring at tank scale is in engineering development. Full-scale demonstration follows the current design phase.
Designed to work with the tank farm’s existing protection systems.
The AXS Tank Protection Ring does not replace overfill prevention, fixed foam, shell cooling, secondary containment or the site fire plan. Its purpose is to add protection in the space between the tank and the rest of the tank farm.
